Dear Jefferson Middle School Academy Students and Families,

It is with great excitement that I greet you at the beginning of the second semester of the 2018-2019 school year.  Your children are growing academically, emotionally, and socially.  I thank each one of you for your enthusiasm and partnership, in our efforts to make Jefferson Academy the highest achieving middle school in Washington, DC.  Parent/Guardian support plays an important part in helping preteens and teens succeed in middle school.  We are committed to ensuring all Jefferson Academy families are informed.  Please use this link to access the Family/Community Calendar.  Here, you will find information on past and upcoming school events.

As the school staff identifies and builds upon your child’s academic strengths and areas of growth, I ask that you collaborate with us to guarantee your children comes to school every day prepared to grow and learn.  Our goal this year is to ensure that every student attends school regularly.  Showing up to school has a huge impact on your child’s academic success.  Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely, every day, and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and life.

Homework Expectations:
During the middle school years, homework gets more intense and the time spent will probably take longer than it did during the elementary years.  Families are encouraged to purchase and check their child’s agenda book each night and direct their children to ask for help when needed.  The agenda book is a planner provided to students to develop organization and communication skills. With these planners being a part of the classroom experience, students are more likely to keep track of their assignments, set personal goals, and enhance communication between teachers, students, and parents.  Please contact your child’s teacher for details or our main office staff to purchase ($6.00) a student agenda book.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO): Volunteering at Jefferson or getting involved with the PTO is a great way to show you are interested in your child’s education. Keep in mind, that while some middle school students like to see their parents at school or school events, others may feel embarrassed by their parents’ presence.  Follow your child’s cues to determine how much interaction works for both of you and whether your volunteering should stay behind the scenes.  Parents/Guardians can get involved by: As always, continue to stay connected with your child’s classroom teachers. As middle school students become more independent, staying connected can serve as a challenge, yet extremely important to their success.  While activities at school, new interests, and expanding social circles can become more central to the lives of many middle school students, parents and guardians are still their anchors for providing love and guidance.  At Jefferson Academy, we have social workers, a guidance counselor, community partners, teachers, and a leadership team here to support.  Please use this link to access our Community Folder to connect us.

Your support of Jefferson Academy for the benefit of all students really makes a difference.  Thank you for your dedication.
